My new CD is coming back from duplication very soon. This will be my fifth album! I’ve learned a lot in the time that I’ve had Model M (which I began in 1994). In the beginning, I didn’t have much money and recording studios were like, $45/hr, which was basically unattainable for a guy that worked as a labourer for $8/hr. So I began recording at home.

I got very good at it and eventually released my first CD in 1999. For the past 17 years, my musical style hasn’t really changed so much as I feel that I’ve gotten better at it.

What I’ve learnt: You must constantly challenge yourself and be honest with yourself about all your musical endeavours. Never stop learning or grow stagnant. You must always get the best sound quality you can. Ask a million questions. Try and get the best players that you possibly can to play on your material and pay them what they want. Practice, practice, practice. Make sure your artwork is the best that you can come up with. Put your all into everything you do. Don’t be overcome by emotions, as they are your enemies— use simple logic instead.

I just wanted to put this down for myself to remember. There are things that I forget, and I get wound up in emotion that derails my logic.. heh

The Eagle is Coming

So, while I was walking on Commercial Drive a few days ago, I saw a native guy leaning against a meter. He was smiling at me mischievously. I thought the typical “oh boy he’s going to ask me for money.” As I approached, he said to me: “Hey! The Eagles are about to hatch!” He then made a very loud Eagle sound. So much so that it pierced my eardrum. He then laughed boisterously and continued, “are you ready for the sign?” I turned to look at him and said, “Thanks! I am ready for the Eagle!”

I can’t tell you how many times something like this has happened to me in my life— someone says something very relevant to my personal bigger picture.

I’m almost done with my 5th album, The Eagle. I’ve only got one more piece to put into it, and it’s done— we’re talking hours, here. It’s funny how all the pieces in this puzzle of life are relavent to each other.

First things first, the eggs need to hatch before the eagles can fly.

Mindflow Video Update

Hey everyone! So, Nina’s been working hard on the music video for Mindflow, and it looks like the rough cut is about done. It was a lot of work to film and cut, as it’s a very energetic song!

In any case, all that’s left is the final mix of the song, colour correction, and a couple of tweaks here and there, then I’ll make sure it’s up and viewable for everyone to enjoy. I think you’ll find it entertaining.

Here’s the premise: A house party goes wrong when a couple of friends peer pressure a person into smoking pot, not knowing that he has a rather… unusual reaction to it. As he runs amok around the urban land of Vancouver trying to take it all in, Model M sings of another level in the mind while traversing the jungle— juxtaposing the character’s drug-induced hysteria in the urban setting with the seemingly chaotic jungle (which is actually quite peaceful).

The video (and the song, for that matter) is full of metaphors, so take what you will from it. Bottom line, it’s entertaining. (At least, I think it is!)

Hey there! Welcome to the brand spanking new site, all ready to go for my upcoming album, The Eagle. I’ve only got a couple more songs to go (and a few awesome remixes in the works!) so stay tuned. There’s also a new music video being edited as we speak, which I’m especially excited about!
